Question 1:
By applying the Community of Inquiry framework (Garrison et al.) to online learning environments, what can be done in these categories, or done better, to create a more balanced and robust educational experience?

Answer 1:

Social Presence: the ability to project one’s self and establish personal and purposeful relationships. The three main aspects of social presence are effective communication, open communication and group cohesion.”

Guidelines for interacting and engagement; due dates, assignments, etc. Build an online community and accountability. It also must have value to those participating otherwise they will opt-out of being part of the community.





Cognitive Presence: the exploration, construction, resolution and confirmation of understanding through collaboration and reflection in a community of inquiry.

The social presence help facilitate the collaboration of cognitive presence and facilitated by the teacher presence.




Teacher Presence: the ability to design, facilitate and directly instruct students.

Teach faculty how to design for electronic delivery; specifically how to increase student engagement and retention. Faculty willing to learn what tools are available and how to use them.

Dr. Bror Saxberg, Chief Learning Officer of Kaplan Inc., discusses five "Myths About the Mind" in his article here. Dr. Saxberg is a cognitive scientist with a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from M.I.T. and an M.D. from Harvard Medical School. At Kaplan Inc., Dr. Saxberg explores the workings of the mind to inform and improve learning environments including online and offline curriculum materials.

Below are the five common misconceptions about how minds work:
  • Your mind is an internal monologue
  • Your mind works like a computer
  • Expert minds just know more things than regular minds do
  • Your mind is like other minds
  • Talent makes things easier




Question 2:
How can online learning be re-imagined to address these myths? What's needed in the online learning environment? What needs to be removed or minimized?





Answer 2:
